Ghanaian equities extended a strong 2026 run, with the Ghana Stock Exchange Composite Index reaching 14,724.26 points and gaining 67.89% year to date, according to the Bank of Ghana’s first investor bulletin, published on September 10.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index rose 77.94% year to date, outpacing the broader market. The central bank’s bulletin did not identify individual stocks behind the move, leaving the index performance as the clearest official measure of the rally.
The market advance comes as Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators have improved. The Bank of Ghana said real GDP growth reached 6.4% year on year in the first quarter, while August inflation was 5.0%, up from 4.6% in July but still within the bank’s 8% plus or minus 2 percentage-point target band.
The central bank maintained its monetary policy rate at 14% in July. It also said the average lending rate fell to 20.65% in June from 29.22% a year earlier, while the interbank weighted average rate declined to 9.81% from 29.00%.
For investors, the next policy checkpoint is the Bank of Ghana’s 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting, scheduled for September 23-24. The committee will review economic developments as markets weigh the durability of the equity rally, the cedi’s recent performance and the effect of lower domestic interest rates on capital flows.
